GETTING STARTED

Bible Quiz (also called Teen Bible Quiz or TBQ) is broken into three divisions of quizzing with all the divisions open to teenagers in 6th through 12th grade. Each of the divisions cover different amounts of the portion of Scripture for the year. For 2024-2025 we are studying portions of the book of Acts. We will be using the New Living Translation 2015 (NLT), and the breakdown of the material is as follows.

XP5 Contender Championship
League 1 Acts 2 (47 vs) Acts 1-4 (136 vs) Acts 1-5 (178 vs)
League 2 Acts 4 (37 vs) Acts 5-7 (117 vs) Acts 6-9 (158 vs)
League 3 Acts 5 (42 vs) Acts 8-9:19 (58 vs) Acts 10-13 (155 vs)
League 4 Acts 9 (43 vs) Acts 9:20-10:48 (72 vs) Acts 14-17 (143 vs)
League 5 Acts 10 (48 vs) review Acts 1-10 review Acts 1-17
TOTAL 169 verses 383 verses 634 verses

The XP5 division is a great place to start for those new to quizzing in general as well as those who are coming up from Junior Bible Quiz who want to grow into understanding TBQ. It is no harder than JBQ, and helps introduce the differences between the two programs. The XP stands for Experience, and the 5 stands for the five minutes of study per day your quizzers will need to excel. The material for XP5 is significantly less than the amount of Scripture the other divisions study. Each season features four or five quiz meets, which cover one or two chapters with roughly 30 to 40 verses overall. That’s a level that any quizzer can master with just five minutes per day.

A Bible Quiz match consists two teams competing by answering 20 questions in three point values. There are eight 10-point questions, nine 20-point questions, and three 30-point questions. In the XP5 level, 10 out of the 20 questions in each match come from the Contender Study Questions which can be purchased to use in practices. 2 more questions in each match come from the Application Questions. Application Questions are designed to go more in depth with the material and are used by all levels of Bible Quiz during the four League Meets. The other eight questions per match aren’t published beforehand. To answer these questions you will need to memorize the portion of the Scripture that is for that particular meet. This memorization of the Scripture is the focus of the whole ministry, and it’s also the key to competition. If your quizzers are able to memorize the entire portion being covered, they will essentially be quizzing from an open book.

Unlike all other levels of both Teen and Junior Bible Quiz, in XP5, there is no review of previous material as the season moves along. Once you have quizzed over the first meet’s material, you don’t cover that again for the rest of the season. The second meet has entirely new material, as does the third and fourth meets. Study time is spent on new material only.

XP5 matches have one other significant difference: the first 12 questions of each match are directed to only one team or the other on an alternating basis. Even if you have less experienced teens, they won’t have to go head-to-head against the other team at first. After 12 questions, the quizmaster calls a one-minute official time out for coaches to talk to their quizzers and then the two teams compete against each other, just like in Junior Bible Quiz.

While there is a competitive aspect to XP5 as there is in other Bible Quiz divisions, it’s mainly just a fun way to learn the Bible and transition to Teen Bible Quiz. Winning teams and individual quizzers are given awards at each meet, but at the end of the season there’s no playoffs — you’re done.

So what do you need to get started in XP5?
1. Scripture portions of the material being studied. You can buy them for each quizzer and coach for $11 + S&H = $12 from MyHealthyChurch. Also I have several available for anyone who wants to pick them up in person. (Acts Scripture portions can be purchased here.)
2. Question sets for practice. I recommend the Acts Digital Bundle as it contains all the official products Bible Quiz produces for League meets. They are purchased and downloaded on digitalMyHealthyChurch (a different site then where the Scripture portions are purchased from).
3. A buzzer box is helpful for practice to prepare your teens for the meets. If your church has Junior Bible Quiz, you can borrow one from them as we use the same style quiz boxes. Also there are places to buy quiz boxes which are listed on our resources page. If you are new to Bible Quiz and don’t have access to a quiz box, let us know as we have a few available to loan out.
